Ugly Kid Joe
Formed on the California coast during the heartbeat between Cock Rock and Grunge, the obnoxious skate-punk funk-metal hard-rock band had no peers, no rivals and no limits as they shot to fame gloriously as the only band ever to go platinum with their debut EP …still the best-selling EP in history.
A band who always seem to be looking more to amuse themselves rather than chase fame, choosing parody and subversion right from the start with the band name itself being a joke on glam rockers Pretty Boy Floyd, then doubling down with album titles ‘America’s Least Wanted’ ‘Ugly as they wanna be’ ‘Menace to Sobriety’ ‘Motel California’ and tours such as the ‘Gone Snowboarding Tour’
But despite never taking themselves too seriously, both contemporary success and revisionist reviews of their back catalogue reveal that the material was not only fucking cool for the time but also strong enough maintain their global cult following over 30yrs on.
Ugly Kid Joe have also managed to pull off another unique feat by appearing to be your local unruly surf-bum garage band but perfectly at home playing stadiums and festival main stages across the world. This is largely due to the vast natural talents of each member; it takes a lot of serious musicianship to be so effortlessly rad and never miss a beat.
They have recorded and toured with many Rock and Metal legends, from Lemmy, Rob Halford, Phil Campbell guesting on tracks to sharing the stage with Ozzy, Van Halen and Guns n’ Roses to name a few.
Following a 10yr hiatus, the band reformed in 2010.
The delinquent humour remains and saluting their heroes continues with more recent releases ‘Stairway to Hell’ (2012) ‘Uglier Than They Used Ta Be’ (2015) and ‘Rad Wings of Destiny’ (2022) showing they still have no desire to play by the rules only continue to grow old disgracefully but never grow up.
With end of year Spotify numbers for 2022 confirming their enduring popularity Ugly Kid Joe are literally loved by millions.
